Last Festival day - 4 great concerts!

1. Legendary John Zorn in 3 concerts
2. Festival closing - Tin
3. Burnt Sugar playing in Toronto

The 15th annual Guelph Jazz Festival is coming to an end tomorrow, and what a day it will be! Legendary New York jazz composer, bandleader and improviser John Zorn is in town for two ticketed concerts (one a double-bill concert) - that's three big shows, each with their own unique sound and personality. To hear his distinctive styles, listen here to the three Zorn tracks we've posted on our website. Plus, to close the Festival with a party, Tin is performing at The Bookshelf's eBar. We had to turn away people at last year's closing show, and this year promises to be no different. Read on and find out more...

1. Legendary John Zorn in 3 concerts

The Main Stage at the River Run Centre is where John Zorn (New York) will play his first Festival concert, Improvisations. Collective improvisation is at the core of Zorn's musical background and he is recognized as one of the greats in this genre. This special presentation will feature small-group collective improvisations with members of his acclaimed Electric Masada band (Cyro Baptista, Trevor Dunn, Ikue Mori, Marc Ribot, Jamie Saft and Kenny Wolleson). Tickets are still available for this show, but don't wait until the last minute to book.

The Main Stage at the River Run Centre remains headquarters for John Zorn as he performs his double-bill concert The Dreamers and Electric Masada. The Dreamers is a new suite by the ever-prolific composer, and he conducts his Electric Masada band but with one notable difference -- Kenny Wolleson is on vibes instead of drums. With this one change, Zorn is able to create a feeling of nostalgia with inspiration from surf music, organ-trio jazz, film music, and psychedelia. Highlights are sure to be Marc Ribot's inimitable guitar playing, and of course, Zorn's caustic saxophone.

The name "Masada" from Zorn's Electric Masada often refers to his book of 500-plus brief compositions that are at the core of his exploration of what he calls "Radical Jewish Culture". Many ensembles have interpreted this book in innumerable ways. Electric Masada, however, is the most active ensemble. It features renown band members of New Yorks' Downtown scene, at times revolving around Zorn's brilliant conducting, and other times showcasing his idiosyncratic saxophone playing. Centre orchestra tickets are all sold out for this double-bill concert, however, seats are still available for the wing and balcony areas.

2. Festival closing - Tin

If you're looking for a great festival party that's inexpensive (just $6 a head) with good music, then Tin is your band. Playing at The Bookshelf's eBar on Sunday evening, David Bazinet (drums), Steven Beauchamp (bass, guitar, vocals), Joel Fulford (keyboards, electronics, guitar, bass, vocals) and Karl Skene (keyboards, electronics, guitar, bass, vocals) will be joined by video artist Chris Veilleux. While studying at the University of Guelph, the band formed in 2005 after finding inspiration from the creative energy of 1970s art rock and the experimentation of electroacoustic music. They've since released two Eps (Fleeting and Activity) and are working on a third. Don't miss this dynamic local band and a chance to party as the Festival closes another great year!

3. Burnt Sugar playing in Toronto

If you're headed back to Toronto later Sunday evening, or if you'll be there anyway, take note of Burnt Sugar playing at Lula Lounge at 8pm. For more info., visit Lula Lounge.
