The Necks (Australia)
Second act on a double bill with Lotte Anker / Craig Taborn / Gerald Cleaver (Denmark/USA).
This longstanding Sydney-based group deploys classic piano-trio instrumentation to original and striking effect. Unlike the soloistic traditions of conventional jazz, the music of The Necks is produced through layers of complementary, interlocking, repetitive material that unfolds gradually over time, resulting in shimmering and trance-inducing tapestries of sound. While genre labels like 'minimalist' or 'ambient' give some idea of what The Necks are up to, neither accommodates the fundamentally improvisatory nature of the music. The deep sensitivity of these players ensures that what could otherwise be merely a technical procedure is a warmly human act that shines with a bit of magic and wonder. Chris Abrahams, piano; Lloyd Swanton, bass; Tony Buck, drums
