Satoko Fujii ma-do (Japan)
Pianist Satoko Fujii last visited Guelph for the 2005 Festival with her husband, trumpeter Natsuki Tamura, and the top-flight New York rhythm section of Mark Dresser and Jim Black. It was an ideal context in which to consider Fujii’s highly personal synthesis of piano styles across idioms, including kinetic-but-controlled exploration of Cecil Taylor, ostinato-driven hypnotism of Abdullah Ibrahim, and even a touch of Bill Evans lyricism. Tamura was equally impressive, with his full-voice and often plaintive trumpet playing interweaving with Fujii’s piano player to form one cogent and satisfying improvisatory structure after another.
Their ma-do quartet is a brand new project that has just recorded in April 2008. We expect tremendous things from Satoko Fujii – as thoughtful, rigorous and expressive an artist as they come in contemporary music.
