Sangha (B.C.)
Sangha is a Vancouver-based quartet that mixes Persian, Indian, and Arabic musical traditions in order to create a group music that is wholly contemporary while maintaining ties to each of these histories. Through the group’s diverse instrumentation alone (oud, tar, tabla, and tombek), Sangha – as the group’s name connotes in Sanskrit – represents an assembly or the forging of common bonds, and it is through each player’s improvising tradition through which such bonds are sought.
Each member of Sangha is an accomplished performer in various music traditions and, moreover, has worked extensively in jazz and other popular music styles. Collectively, their music demonstrates thrilling virtuosity, rhythmic acumen, and a rich group sound that provides a compelling foundation for each member’s improvisations. In this way, and through their individual mixture of source materials, Sangha has established itself one of Canada’s premier world music ensembles.
