DJ Spooky & Vijay Iyer (New York)
DJ Spooky (aka Paul D. Miller) has been steadily creating a body of work as a producer, conceptual artist, writer, and turntablist for long enough that the reference to age in his sub-moniker, “That Subliminal Kid,” may soon need revision. Through this maturation process, this astoundingly prolific artist has collaborated with musicians as varied as Iannis Xenakis and Killa Priest from Wu-Tang Clan.
While a significant portion of his recent work is comprised of writing, lecturing, and publishing – he has recently edited Sound Unbound: Sampling Digital Music and Culture (MIT Press) – DJ Spooky continues to perform regularly, including recent jazz-related projects with the likes of William Parker, Matthew Shipp, Joe McPhee, and, in Guelph, with brilliant New York-based pianist, Vijay Iyer.
Named in 2007 as “Number One Rising Star Jazz Artist” in the prestigious Downbeat Magazine Critics’ Poll, Iyer has thoroughly established himself in the international scene of jazz and creative improvised music. Having most recently visited Guelph with Rudresh Mahanthappa as Raw Materials, Iyer is a polymath performer (extending jazz piano traditions through several other musical traditions), composer, writer, and commentator in the field of creative music.
This collaboration between DJ Spooky and Vijay Iyer brings together two of the keenest musical imaginations at work in America, as well as two insightful, articulate, and creative respondents to the musical culture in which they work.
